The American Express Members Project

So AMEX is giving away up to $5 million to the project/idea that wins.  A friend of a friend entered and her idea was selected as a finalist!  If you have an AMEX card, then you can vote for it!  Even better, if you already pay your AMEX bill online you don't need to setup another account for this contest.  Please vote now!

Dear friends -

We entered our project (description below) in the American Express MembersProject competition (you might have seen TV ads for it!) for $1-5 million to implement our innovative idea for social change. Our idea, "Social Mobility for Youth in Low-Wage Jobs," will help urban youth move out of poverty and achieve their life ambitions and dreams, allowing them to be financially self-sufficient and stable.

Our project was picked to be in the TOP 50 out of 7,018 submissions!
Please vote by July 13 to ensure you meet the voting deadline -- but it would help us if you vote NOW because the projects can be sorted/ranked by the number of votes

Help us move to the next round, the Top 25. --We have a 50% chance!

So please lend your support to us and if you are an American Express cardmember (even corporate AMEX cards count!):
- VOTE for our project for FREE ASAP at:
"Social Mobility for Youth in Low-Wage Jobs"

- if you register for MembersProject, AMEX will donate $1 to the grand prize

Even if you do not have an AMEX card, you can help us by:
1. asking at least ONE other person with an AMEX card to vote
2. emailing all your friends, family, community, listservs, coworkers
3. posting this on your blog (Xanga, FaceBook, MySpace, etc.)

4. becoming an "ambassador" for our cause - help us strategize on how to spread the word

Thank you for helping us get this far!
Nancy

PS - This project also won the $500 from the Razoo speed granint event!

Social Mobility for Youth in Low-Wage Jobs

Project Description:
Many urban youth in low-wage, entry-level jobs do not have access to the resources they need to move out of poverty. They often have difficulty keeping their jobs due to low workplace skills, poor health, or limited childcare or transportation options. Those who achieve some upward mobility usually have supportive, stable families and social networks. This program takes a comprehensive approach to ease persistent barriers to social mobility for hardworking low-income youth. Youth "pay" for workforce development services by regularly contributing part of their paychecks to a savings account. Their investments give them access to supports for employment training, healthcare, or logistical needs; workshops on asset building and financial management; opportunities for civic engagement; and guidance in setting and planning to reach their education, career, and life goals. After a year, youth withdraw their account balances with accrued interest and use their earnings to improve their lives.

Africa or Bust

Hello all,
I know it's been a while since I've seen or talked to some of you so I'm glad to reconnect over a pretty awesome opportunity. I have entered a contest to support a human rights/development project via GlobalGiving in South Africa.  If I raise the most individual donations of at least $10 per person donating by Dec 31, 2006, then I will win a trip to visit the project that I am sponsoring next year!  (Sorry, I know I kind of waited until the last minute...)

This would mean so much to me, so please help!  Unfortunately there is no benefit to me winning the contest if you donate more than $10.  So, if you can get a roommate/relative/friend to donate the other $10's that you would have donated that would be effective in getting me there closer!  Of course, if you decide to donate more than $10 that would benefit the project's success.  All donations are tax-deductible.

All you need to do is go to this link to donate at least $10 to my South African urban farming project.  You will be prompted to set up a login name and password, but all that is required is an email address for a receipt/recordkeeping--you do not need to give any other personal information if you don't want to.  Then, login to the site, find my registry and you can donate via credit card or Paypal online.  Checks will also be accepted if you follow these directions:

Checks must be received at GlobalGiving's offices in DC by 12/31/06 to count towards my contest entry, so please mail the checks soon as I estimate it takes 2-3 business days for mail from NYC to DC.

Make checks payable and mail to:
The GlobalGiving Foundation
1816 12th Street NW, 3rd Floor
Washington, DC 20009

In the memo, be sure to write: Grace Wong, Net Impact, Project ID# 714

Hope you all enjoy the holidays!  Thanks for your generosity and interest!
Grace

Class Action

I have found others who suffer with me when it comes to Cingular's most dropped calls and poor service.  I gag everytime their commercials are on TV.

http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/corporate/rp/6540.pdf

By the way, it's not a good sign that they don't have audited pro forma financial statements on their website beyond FYE 2004...

On October 26, 2004, Cingular acquired AT&T Wireless, combining substantially all of their respective domestic wireless operations.  The following tables present selected unaudited pro forma
combined consolidated financial statements and key operating metrics for the new combined entity.  Although we believe this presentation provides meaningful comparative information for
existing operations, it is not intended to represent or be indicative of the consolidated results of operations or financial condition of Cingular that would have been reported had the merger
been completed as of the dates presented, and should not be taken as representative of the future consolidated results of operations or financial condition of Cingular.
